Tanza, Cavite – June 27, 2026 — The Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), in partnership with the Reserve Command of the Philippine Army (RESCOM PA), with the support of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS), successfully conducted a one-day Gun Safety Training for journalists and media practitioners at Camp Riego de Dios, Tanza, Cavite.
The activity gathered members of various media organizations, including the National Press Club (NPC), Philippine Press Institute (PPI), Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), PTFOMS, PAPI members, and other media practitioners.
The training aimed to promote safety awareness, discipline, responsibility, and preparedness among members of the press through proper firearm handling knowledge and supervised practical familiarization.
The program opened with an invocation led by Leonida Cardona, followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem.
PAPI National President Rebecca “Beck” M. Velasquez delivered the welcome remarks, emphasizing the importance of safety awareness among journalists who face different risks in the performance of their duties.
“Journalists face risks daily; safety awareness is not optional but essential to our duty,” Velasquez said.
PTFOMS Executive Director Usec. Jose “Joe” Torres Jr. served as guest speaker and underscored the government’s commitment to protecting media practitioners, stressing that safety is a shared responsibility.
During the event, Usec. Torres also paid a courtesy call to RESCOM Philippine Army Commander Major General Ronald Jess Alcudia, together with PAPI President Rebecca “Beck” Velasquez and Chairman Nelson Santos.
Also present was Col. Arnold S. Panaligan GSC PA, OIC–Chief of Staff and Commandant, RESCOM Training School, who supported the conduct of the training.
The morning session focused on the fundamentals of gun safety and legal responsibilities.
PLT Levie O. Sinatad discussed the Fundamental Rules of Gun Safety and Accident Prevention, highlighting the importance of proper handling and awareness.
PSSG Angelo Carlo C. Vallarta provided an orientation on firearm regulations, including LTOPF processing and renewal of firearms, as well as safety protocols.
Col. Arnold S. Panaligan concluded the session with discussions on the legal aspects of firearms in the Philippines, reminding participants to understand their responsibilities and act within the bounds of the law.
In the afternoon, participants underwent a Range Safety Briefing followed by a supervised familiarization firing activity using standard 9mm pistols. The activity was facilitated by AFP personnel and focused on discipline, proper procedures, and responsible firearm use.
The event concluded with an open forum, recap, and awarding of certificates to participants and guest lecturers who shared their expertise.
PAPI President Rebecca “Beck” Velasquez expressed her gratitude to the RESCOM Philippine Army and PTFOMS for their partnership and support in making the training possible.
The initiative reflects PAPI’s commitment to empowering journalists and media practitioners with knowledge and skills that promote safety, preparedness, and professionalism in the line of duty.
