PBBM orders DPWH to fast-track key flood control project in Cavite

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday directed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to expedite the completion of the Cavite Industrial Area—Flood Risk Management Project (CIA-FRMP).

President Marcos stressed the project should be able to withstand the impacts of climate change, especially the recurring flooding.

“Sa DPWH, siguruhin natin na matapos ito sa lalong madaling panahon at siguruhin natin na maganda ang kalidad nito upang kayanin ang mga pagbaha na dulot ng climate change,” President Marcos said during the distribution of cash aid to farmers and fisherfolk in Tagaytay.

The project, which is expected to be completed by 2029, will prevent severe flooding in the lower reach of the San Juan River Basin and its adjacent Maalimango Creek Drainage Area.

Last week, the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Board, chaired by President Marcos, approved the increased cost and extended construction period of the CIA-FRMP.

Project cost was increased from PhP9.9 billion to PhP22.04 billion to accommodate changes in scope of work that would now include widening of diversion channels and additional drainage channels.

The original timeline of the CIA-FRMP was from October 2019 to April 2024. It was moved from April 2025 until September 2029.

Based on current scope of work, the project has a 49.34 percent accomplishment rate. | PND
