TALAKAG, Bukidnon – Talaandig farmers in Barangay San Miguel are receiving science and technology support to improve their production of high-value crops such as carrots, broccoli, and potato.
The intervention is through the project Science and Technology Community-Based Farm (STCBF) Talaandig Special Project led by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD), and implemented on the ground by DOST Northern Mindanao.
STCBF is a core technology transfer and commercialization modality developed by DOST-PCAARRD. It acts as an expanded version of a science-and-technology-based farm designed to bridge the gap between research outputs and practical application in farming and fishing communities.
Under the project, the Indigenous Peoples (IP) community gains access to tested farming practices and technical guidance aimed at addressing production, post-harvest challenges and improving yields.
Further, the project further forms part of the government’s continuing support for IP communities and farmer groups, particularly those in geographically and economically underserved areas.
Beyond the technologies themselves, the project is expected to help the Talaandig farmers strengthen their farming practices, raise productivity, and open better market opportunities for their crops.
DOST Northern Mindanano is likewise inviting other farmer associations and agricultural communities across region 10 to explore possible collaboration. Farmer groups facing production challenges or seeking appropriate technologies may coordinate with the agency to identify S&T solutions suited to their needs.
